wireframing

What?

I started making a wireframe structure with some GI wire I found. I decided to start with circles, since I had worked with the cubes before. I used twine to bind them together. I made circles of various diameters, without measurement. And then joined the circles together with 5 links of wire. As I joined them, the shape began to form. And the wire got more and more rigid. I used a cyanoacrylate based glue on the twine to fix it. As the various pieces pushed and pulled together and my eyes judged what looked ‘right’ I fixed each joint. I also tried using epoxy M Seal to hold the joints further. What emerged had a lovely sketchy quality, though the lines were not quite ‘right’. The structure was form and tight though. The first phase when I was working out the joinery was difficult and the learning curve upward. But once the plateau was reached, it became very enjoyable.

So what?

I think this exercise showed me the power of free making and starting without a plan. It allows me to use my eyes, sense of touch, my aesthetic sensibility, precision and ability to make small adjustments spontaneously. This is a fairly powerful tool to think, although it needs some amount of confidence to begin.

What next?

To build on this kind of making with more materials, to take forward this form too.
