What?
I worked with the origami cubes I made earlier with the 25 year old paper. I put them together as an abstract block (dare I say) sculpture. It was surprisingly difficult. The blocks were delicate and it was hard to to think in 3D. Finally I made three basic units with4 blocks each and then put them together. So there was logic involved after all, it was not so ‘free’. As a next step, I decided to use epoxy resin to coat the piece.
I’ve never used resin and so wanted to try it. I bought some from the local art supplier, Manasi stationers. I assumed the epoxy resin was toxic, which it is wile you work with it, but after drying, it becomes fairly stable and does not really release any more off-gas.
It is basically made up of phenol and acetone (nail polish remover?) and the hardener is an amide or polyamide. The bottles don’t say anything.
I thought about using epoxy and on the whole felt it was justified. It will preserve my very old paper, add structure and it is quite benign after it dries off.
So what?
This exercise was interesting because I had put together several elements without much pre-planning. This is an exercise which combines some play and some logic.
What next?
I might continue to build on this and make more blocks to make a larger ‘sculptural’ piece.
